I was asked by one of my subscribers (PinkFlower2410) via YouTube to do a video on the difference between the Sigma F-80 Flat Top Kabuki brush and the Sigma F-45 Buffer Brush. Sigma F-80 Synthetic Flat Top Kabuki Brush
Both of these brushed are densely packed and used to apply foundation to the face. The main difference? The Sigma F-80 has flat head with synthetic hairs and the F-45 has natural hairs with a tapered head. The flat head of the F-80 is great for applying thick or gel-based foundations like Revlon Colorstay or Makeup Forever Mat Velvet +. The F-80 is great for controlling hard to blend foundation by buffing it in to the skin for an even, air brushed finish.
The F-45 is great for dusting setting powder over your liquid foundation or lessening harsh contour lines or bright blushers. The large head of the F-45 makes it great for dusting mineral powder all over the face for a quick running-out-the-door makeup application.
I’ve also been told its best apply liquid foundation with a synthetic brush because using natural fibered brushes to apply liquid foundation can damage the brush over time. Whether you choose to believe that theory or not, I have found that using synthetic brushes for liquid foundation makes the blending process a lot easier. I’ve also found that using natural fibered brushes to apply mineral makeup such as Bare Esentuals works a lot better than synthetic brushes. So how should you choose between these two brushes? I would ask the following questions:
- What is your daily foundation routine? Do you tend to use more liquid foundations or powder foundations?
- Do you have problems controlling your thick liquid foundations? Do you have a hard time making your foundation look airbrushed and even?
- What brushes do you already have in your collection? Do they have natural fibers or synthetic fibers?
- Do you have a traditional kabuki brush in your collection, or a similar large powder brush?
Overall, I love both of these brushes and I think they are two essentials for everyone to have in their makeup collections. At $16 and $19 each, why not give them a try?
